Most obvious are corrupted MBR sector, boot.ini or other kind of system damage or worst hard drive failure. For recovering data you will need alternative operating computer, CD and internet connection. Now let's get your data back.
Method 1
Here we are going to recover files with free Ubuntu operating system. What you will have to do is to download Ubuntu Live CD image and mount it on a CD. When you are done insert it into computer from which you want to recover files. Now boot into Linux (enable option in BIOS) and when asked choose option try Ubuntu without any change to computer. Follow steps and soon Linux will be up and running. Now when you see your new desktop move your mouse to menu bar on top and choose places and than computer. There you will find your hard drive's icon. Click on it and there you should see all your programs and documents. Now insert an empty USB drive into your computer and simply copy files from your damaged hard drive onto it.

Method 2
Involves some physical work. You will have to manually open a computer case, remove hard drive and attach it into working computer as a secondary device. Just be careful you connect it on slave sata or ide connector. When you are done simply boot Windows and under my computer you will see your new hard drive. Click it and you should be able to see your files. Now just copy your files to safe location or if you do not see any files, use this software and scan damaged hard drive.

Method 3
In case your hdd is not spinning any more methods above won't help. All you can do is to send it to special data-recovering companies for analysis. But bear in mind these companies will charge you a lot of money for their service without guarantee of success so it is worth contacting them only if you really want to get back your files. The price of their help can go into thousands of dollars.

Hi Jason
I hope you will get your data back. If your laptop fell from not so high than it is a good chance hdd is still ok. Just take it out and attach it to your or friend's desktop computer. Alternatively as our reader suggested you may buy not so expansive USB TO SATA controller where you connect hdd on one side via sata or ide on the other side comes as a usb. That way you do not have to open your desktop computer you just conect it with this controller's help.

tell us if you managed to save data buddy
