Rising Antivirus 2009 Free Edition Review

Rising AntiVirus is not as known as other free products in its branch worldwide but this does not mean it is not worth giving a try. In fact it received several certificates from Virus Bulletin, TUV and Checkmark Westcoast Lab which means it certainly is capable of getting malware out of your computer. But how effectively!

For the first time I heard of Rising AntiVirus several month ago but lately it has caught my attention again. Since getting Checkmark and similar certification is not really a relevant indication of how well such software performs against unknown malware I grabbed it's free edition end ran it through my malware collection to find out how good it really was. At the end of my tests this is what I found out.

Rising Antivirus Free Edition Detection rate was approximately 60% despite its Application Behavior Interceptor. To me this is quite concerning. But in my opinion RA has a good potential to become as strong as other well-known and similar suites.

For the test to be relevant I simultaneously ran Eset antivirus 4 and ThreatFire Free edition. Not surprisingly they both detected and quarantined every single trojan I threw at them though ThreatFire missed 3 uncritical such as forced PC reboot.

Note, that my test is not something you should take as "definite" but rather an indicator of potential security holes this product may have.
