Free network and bandwidth monitoring software and tools

It is always a good idea to monitor internet traffic coming in and out computer. This gives you an insight into bandwidth issues, whether ISP is trully giving you enough bandwidth you are paying for and probably most important it gives you an option to see unknown network traffic that may be caused by malware phoning home. We can monitor network activity in three ways. Most simple method is build right into Windows XP and Vista. To access Windows Vista monitoring panel open run box by pressing win+r and type perfmon.exe. There you will find extended Windows task manager with network monitoring graph.

Second option involves downloading special third-party program. There is no need to pay for such software for there are a bunch of them free of cost.

Network Bandwidth Meter Lite Edition is just one of them. If gives a total network activity insight while residing as a small windows on Windows desktop. It even supports new skins and transparency which gives it a nice gentle look.

BitMeter is more simple and smaller and is more suitable for users than don't need nice-looking software but rather usability.

Third option is to monitor traffic within an existing software firewall. Not every firewall supports this option so you will have to check with your firewall yourself.
