WOT Internet Security and Firefox add-on: Review

WOT addonRecently I received an email from Deborah who asked me if I could write a post about their product. Because WOT is free, popular and useful security service I decided to take a closer look at it.

WOT abbreviation stands for Web Of Trust and it is a security service in form of Firefox add-on developed by the Against Intuition. The idea behind it is to watch over user's browsing habits and inform you of potential malware, phishing and other sinister websites before you visit them. For accurate results this engine takes advantage of two separate techniques.

The first one is cooperation with PhishTank, hpHosts, DNS-BH Malware Domain list and Artists Against 419 which are all well-known ever-growing databases of malware websites and the other one is community reputation ranking which works the way everyone can send opinion about any hostile website he or she comes across with.

In the past I was a little pessimistic about community ranking approach regarding community contribution accuracy. See, the problem is that people are sometimes wrong and you could simply mark a perfectly healthy website as hostile like mine for example which would result in warnings every time you visited my site. Also on one hand some people could mark harmful website as safe and on the other hand others could mark it as unsafe in which case WOT's decision-making system would get confused.

I diminished my doubts by consulting WOT and the representative explained that site rating manipulation is actually not that easy and they use different heuristic techniques to accurately analyze user reports.

According to what I have seen I can recommend this Firefox add-on and conclude with words that this is a useful security add-on for anyone that widely surf internet beyond everyday bookmarked pages.

Hi Medjam8. Glad you like it.
There are some alternatives though like finjin, haute secure, linkscanner, browser defender, siteadvisor and some more. They work the same as wot. Try to google them or send me pm to send you links. These add-ons are also great. Especially haute secure I also wrote sometime ago.
