Reduce Vista System Restore Space

system restore
System restore is Windows built-in safety feature for converting system settings to a previous state back in time. This comes particularly useful when you encounter severe system errors which you do not know how to repair. But the other side of the story is that this useful feature reserves itself 15% of hard drive space which means if you have 500 GB of hard drive space it will automatically take you away 75 GB. On my small 160 GB test hard drive this translated in a hefty 14,8 GB of space. To reduce system restore space to smaller number this is what you should do.

Press start > cmd and type vssadmin list shadowstorage to see how much space you currently have allocated for system restore. To change this amount to for example 2 GB use this command vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C: /for=C: /maxsize=2GB. In case you have your operating system on a different drive change C to D or whatever that drive is.
